In 2019, producer Willemijn Cerutti introduced me to creators Martijn R.S. Blekendaal and Finbarr Wilbrink and asked me to conduct research for their youth TV series ‘I AM’… That was really suuuuuper fun to do; I had a fantastic time working with them on their ideas. COVID postponed the final research production and broadcast of the series. After some touch-up on research and belated production, IT IS HERE! YAAAYYY!!

In I AM – Investigation Art Mysteries, filmmakers Martijn Blekendaal and Finbarr Wilbrink playfully investigate mysteries from modern/contemporary art. Like detectives, the friends delve into art-historical riddles surrounding iconic artists such as Banksy, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Richard Mutt, Alice Neel and Joseph Beuys. Their search for answers also leads to larger questions about identity, friendship, courage and daring to be yourself.

And how deserved is it for the dynamic team that the series is already appreciated in a NRC review for what they really intend to do. “Art is indispensable for a healthy society, say both the makers of I AM and Van Heusden. According to the professor, art teaches children to deal with the unexpected. “An experience is always slightly different than expected. Art tries to capture that experience. That’s why good art is always a bit disruptive.” He sees the ability to be open to something that deviates as an important social value. “In a democracy, you have to learn to deal with differences. Art can help children not to be afraid of the unknown.” The makers of the series emphasize how art can make children look at themselves and the world differently. “We tell them that anyone can be an artist,” says Wilbrink. “That thought is so liberating. I walk the streets differently now.” According to the makers, art education lacks playfulness. “While that is so important to understand who you are and who others are.” They therefore hope that their series will also be watched in the classroom.”

I AM – Investigation Art Mysteries can be seen from Sunday 9 August at 7.25 pm at KRO-NCRV in ZappDoc on NPO 3 and can be streamed via NPO Start.
