DR. FRANZ FANON

Abdenour Zahzah | fiction | 2024 | Algeria / France | 91 min. | French/Arabic – English subtitles | Black & White

In 1953, Algeria was colonized. Fanon, a young black psychiatrist, is appointed head doctor at the Blida-Joinville Hospital. He was putting his theories of ‘Institutional Psychotherapy’ into practice in opposition to the racist theories of the Algiers School of Psychiatry, while a war broke out in his own wards.

There will be a 15-minute introduction by guest speaker Eva Webster, who will present Frantz Fanon and his early intellectual thinking in Martinique. Which experiences shaped his thinking, and what pushed him to leave for Algeria? It will then introduce his core theory about the « Alienation » of a community, an important upbringing in the psychiatric field of work. In parallel, the discussion will reflect on Fanon’s perspective on the Antilles (West Indies) and how leaving for Algeria created a sort of rupture, both personal and theoretical. Ultimately, she will demonstrate how his psychiatric work remains essential to understanding contemporary forms of domination and oppression.

Eva Webster is a French student of Caribbean heritage, with roots in Martinique, Guadeloupe, and Dominica. She is currently studying Political Science at the University of Amsterdam, where her academic interests are shaped by Caribbean and African history, politics, and questions of inequality. She values collective spaces where culture, dialogue, and belonging can flourish. Her ambition is to contribute to cultural and political initiatives that elevate and amplify the voices and experiences of minority communities.

Black Soil began in 2003 as a hip-hop film festival, but broadened its scope to a broader view of Black culture. We show films that stem from Black culture, influence hair, and everything in between. The focus is on how Black culture and aesthetics become visible in film, with hip-hop as an important source of inspiration. The annual Black Soil film festival takes place every year, the second weekend of December, on Friday at LantarenVenster in Rotterdam and on Saturday at LAB111 in Amsterdam. We also organize programs throughout the year, such as film screenings, exhibitions, talks, and concerts, in collaboration and as guest curators for other festivals and venues.
