Black Soil started in 2003 as a hip-hop film festival, but has broadened its view to a broader view of Black culture. We show films that stem from Black culture, influence hair, and everything in between. The focus is on how Black culture and aesthetics become visible in film, with hip-hop as an important source of inspiration. The annual Black Soil film festival takes place every year in the second weekend of December, on Friday in LantarenVenster in Rotterdam and on Saturday in LAB111 in Amsterdam. We also organize programs throughout the year such as film screenings, exhibitions, talks and concerts. For more information and the agenda, check the website: www.blacksoilfilmfestival.com.

The Black Soil program in FABRIEK ZAANDAM consists of two film screenings: The documentary FEIS Forever and the documentary HipHop Minute.

A HIPHOP MINUTE

Pascal Garnier | Documentary| 2024 | Belgium / USA | 90 minutes | English

Cast: DMC, LL Cool J, Roxanne Shante, DJ Spinna, a.o.

In 1986, a Dutch film crew, led by Bram van Splunteren, left for New York to make a documentary about hip-hop. Presenter Marcel Vanthilt does not know which artists he will get in front of the camera. In the end, the team manages to snare young rappers such as LL COOL J, Run DMC and Grandmaster Flash. ‘Big Fun in the Big Town’ becomes a cult classic and inspires many Dutch hoppers, including the young Belgian Pascal Garnier. Now a rapper, DJ, and filmmaker, Garnier is making a sequel to this legendary documentary thirty-five years later. Inspired by Bram van Splunteren’s cult classic Big Fun in the Big Town, this documentary celebrates the rich history and global influence of hip-hop. In ‘A Hiphop Minute’, he combines original footage with new interviews and gives a raw, personal look into the lives of the hip-hop legends. The protagonists are older and wiser, but their eyes still shine at stories about their Golden Age. With voices such as Def Jam’s Cey Adams, Bill Adler and Rhea Combs, A Hip Hop Minute explores the genre’s rise from the Bronx to the world stage, its impact on music, fashion, art and activism. A rhythmic tribute to the movement that changed culture forever.

FEIS FOREVER

Olivier S. Garcia | documentary | Netherlands | 2025 | 54 minutes | Dutch | Cast: Winne, Kees de Koning, U-niq, a.o.

New Year’s Eve 2019. Rotterdam is shocked by the death of Feis, a rapper who represented his neighborhood with raw, honest music. Feis Forever is a testament to his talent, his life, and the future that should have followed. On New Year’s Eve, Feis proudly films the fireworks from his new flat overlooking Rotterdam. Later, he goes out and ends up in a bar with his friends, where a fight breaks out. When everyone is sent out, Feis becomes a victim of gun violence. In Feis Forever, Feis’ friends look back on his life, career, and the event that took his life. Feis has not been forgotten after his tragic death; on the contrary. The documentary shows that Feis’s presence is proudly felt in the city that he and his friends have put on the map. Through the power of hip-hop, he made a lasting impression on a large, diverse group of people.
Faisal Mssyeh, born on January 25, 1986, in Rotterdam, was a beloved person inside and outside the Dutch hip-hop scene. His debut album Hard van Buiten, Gebroken van Binnen (2014) was praised for its raw lyrics and emotional depth. Feis’ death in 2019 sent shockwaves through the music scene and beyond, but his music and inspiration continue to live on.
