The three nominations for the Golden Calf for Best Digital Culture Production were announced on 23 September during the festival program Digital Culture: Storyspace Sessions: Artists, Performers, and Poets Unite. The Golden Calf award ceremony will take place on Friday 27 September during the EY Golden Calf Gala and can be followed live via our website. The three nominees are part of Storyspace, the exhibition of the Netherlands Film Festival in the Neude Library and De LiK, full of VR, AR and other multimedia installations.
The jury, consisting of Abdo Hassan, Jacco Ouwerkerk and Sasha Dees, nominated and announced the following three works:
- Anouschka – Tamara Shogaolu (Ado Ato Pictures, Stichting Ado Ato Interactive)
- Dans Dans Revolutie – Lisa Weeda, BrotherTill (Theater Bellevue)
- Emoticons Don’t Have Wrinkles – Luna Maurer (Luna Maurer)
The jury sees the selection as a reflection of the contemporary trend, in which a revaluation of the balance between the physical and the digital is taking place: a certain transformation in the development of digital culture is becoming visible.
Digital Culture, like the digital space, is constantly evolving and subject to adaptation. In the conversation between form and function, medium and message, time and space, digital makers try to find new symbiotic relationships. In the selection, we see that the makers try to convey human vulnerability and imperfection, in their mission to reconcile being human with the digital medium. Immersion here is an invitation to stay in touch not only with our senses, but also with the ecosystem around us. It is a collective process for nurturing shared commitments. Digital work interacts with a existing web of history, human relationships, and social contexts. With digital culture, we see an explosion of possibilities; new interdisciplinary collaborations, new formats, new points of view and imaginations.
Given the above, we assessed the works based on the following criteria: technological innovation, cultural relevance, storytelling, accessibility, immersion and authenticity. In their essence, the works give the visitor a license to co-create and imagine different futures.
During the Golden Calf Gala on September 27, 2024, Emoticons Don’t Have Wrinkles by Luna Maurer (Luna Maurer) was named the winner of the Golden Calf for Best Digital Culture Products.
